LEO Communication Satellite Forum at TASTI Boosts Access to Global Supply Chain

Uploaded on 2024.11.22

The market for low-Earth orbit (LEO) communication satellites has become highly competitive. The Taiwan International Assembly of Space Science, Technology, and Industry (TASTI), hosted by the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA) and held at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center from November 30 to December 4, will feature four workshop sessions focused on LEO communication satellites. Featured speakers include Glenn Katz, Chief Commercial Officer of Telesat, a well-known LEO communication satellite provider, and Don Brown, Head of Global Government at Amazon Kuiper. These workshops aim to build industry consensus and foster international collaboration.

The five-day event will include international seminars, industry and startup forums, presentations of academic papers, a CubeSat competition, and space micro-courses. From December 1–3, the conference will also host “TASTI EXPO,” Taiwan’s first space industry-focused exhibition, which is expected to attract over 2,000 attendees.

TASA emphasizes Taiwan’s current policy focus on developing LEO communication satellites. The “LEO Communication Satellite Forum” aims to foster industry consensus and networking between potential customers and Taiwanese vendors, with the goal of integrating Taiwanese companies into the international space industry ecosystem. Dr. Celia Chen, forum moderator and project manager of TASA’s B5G LEO communication satellite program, noted that, in addition to TASA’s internationally collaborative B5G program, the Ministry of Digital Affairs is partnering with providers worldwide to implement LEO communication satellite services here in Taiwan and to enhance the country’s communication resilience. This forum provides an ideal platform for international exchange.

The forum, according to Dr. Chen, will feature four thematic sessions: satellite constellation construction, ground terminal equipment, communication payloads, and application services, and these sessions will be incorporating both presentations and discussions. Invited speakers include Glenn Katz (Chief Commercial Officer, Telesat), Shey Sabripour (Founder, CesiumAstro, a U.S. vendor of advanced space communications solutions), Nir Barkan (CEO, SatixFy, an Israeli satellite communication technology chip company), and Mathieu Vandenbossche (Head of Marketing and Key Account Management, Airbus Defence & Space), and they will present and discuss various topics in “Developments in Communication Payloads.”

Regarding advancements in ground terminal equipment, the following guests will be sharing their insights and participate in discussions: Don Brown (Head of Global Government, Amazon Kuiper), Giovanni D’Aliesio (Director of Business Development, Satellite Systems at MDA Space, a Canadian communication satellite systems provider), Sherman Lo (Senior Research Engineer, Stanford University), Hyungmin Cho (Manager, BMW Group Korea), and David Pile (Senior Director of International Business Development, Northrop Grumman Space Systems). These companies possess extensive experience in satellite data applications, promising valuable takeaways for attendees.

In addition to international speakers, representatives from Taiwan’s space technology industry will also participate in panel discussions. These include Leo Chien (Chairman, Ubiqconn), Yu-Pin Chang (Chairman, Auden Techno Group), Michael Lin (Head of Global Business Development and Strategic Partnership, TMY Technology), and Eric Peng (Senior Vice President, Compal Electronics), who will discuss “Development Trends and Technological Breakthroughs in Satellite Ground Equipment.” Yu-Jiu Wang (Chairman, Tron Future Tech), Ya Hsuan Wang (General Manager, Lung Hwa Electronics), and Yeh-Chin Ho (Assistant Vice President, Network Technology Group, Chunghwa Telecom) will explore “Innovations in Satellite Application Services from Land, Sea, and Air.” Both panel discussions will be moderated by Evin Liao, Division Director of ITRI’s Commercialization and Industry Service Center.

Chunghwa Telecom and Foxconn Technology Group are the title sponsors of TASTI 2024, with Northrop Grumman Corporation Taiwan providing exclusive sponsorship for the welcome banquet. Gold sponsors include Wistron Corporation, Integrated Service Technology, Epotech Composite Corporation, HelioX Cosmos Co., Ltd, BizLink International Corporation, Taiwan Shin Kong Security, ispace, Inc., Syscom Group, Rohde & Schwarz Taiwan, and Taiwan Fire & Marine Insurance.
